Unforgiven has been part of the WWE pay per view Calendar since 1998. With this years offering just around the corner, ChampionshipWrestlingOnline selects some of the most memorable matches from the previous year’s events.
1998 - The Undertaker V Kane
Unforgiven 1998 was mainly built up around the feud of The Undertaker and his brother Kane, which had been brewing since Kane entered the WWF in late 1997. The pair had faced each other at Wrestlemania 14, where the Undertaker would eventually gain a victory. Paul Bearer, who was once the Undertaker’s manager, challenged him to face Kane at Unforgiven in a match surrounded by an inferno where the loser would be determined by the first to be set on fire. The Undertaker would win the match after forcing Kane to fall backwards onto the ring and flames making his right arm catch ablaze and he ran from the arena.
1999 - Six-Pack Challenge For The Vacant WWF Championship.
With the WWF Championship vacated, a block busting main event was announced for the pay per view, pitting Triple H, The Rock, Mankind, Kane, The Big Show and The British Bulldog against each other with Stone Cold Steve Austin as Special Outside Enforcer. With the majority of the fans backing The Rock or Mankind to win the match, the end result didn’t go down very well with some!
2000 - Triple H V Kurt Angle
The Summer of 2000 in the world of the WWF was dominated by the increasing friendship of Kurt Angle and Triple H’s wife Stephanie McMahon. After Triple H had accidentally struck his wife with a sledgehammer at Summerslam, he blamed Kurt Angle which resulted in this No DQ match being booked. Mick Foley was drafted in as special guest referee in which Triple H would steal the victory.
2001 - Kurt Angle V Steve Austin
Back in 2001 Vince McMahon had purchased his competition in the pro wrestling world, being WCW and ECW which resulted in the much anticipated, yet criticised “Invasion” angle. In September of that year Steve Austin, who had defected to WCW faced Kurt Angle for the WWF Championship. Kurt Angle would win the match after forcing Steve Austin to submit, and was congratulated in the ring by his family and later the entire WWF roster.
2002 - Triple H V Rob Van Dam
In 2002 Rob Van Dam was truly beginning to establish himself as a major player in the WWE, after receiving extremely positive reactions from the crowd, despite initially being booked as a heel in 2001. Rob Van Dam got his chance at the World Heavyweight Championship against Triple H, but on this night would loose the match after interference by Ric Flair.
2003 - Triple H V Goldberg
2003 was the year that Goldberg finally made his debut in the WWE and found himself straight in the main event picture. After Triple H won the Elimination Chamber match at Summerslam, he, along with members of evolution proceeded to attack Goldberg. The next week on Raw Goldberg challenged Triple H, which he agreed on the condition that if he won the match, Goldberg would have to retire from professional wrestling. Goldberg would win the match and title at the Pay Per View with his signature Spear and Jackhammer combination.
2004 - Chris Jericho V Christian
After Edge was stripped of the Intercontinental Championship due to injury, Christian demanded that general manager Eric Bischoff awarded him the vacant championship. Chris Jericho then suggested that he and Christian wrestle in a match on Raw over the championship, which Bischoff declined, opting to book a Ladder match at Unforgiven between the two. In a fondly remembered ladder match, Chris Jericho won the championship.
2005 - Matt Hardy V Lita
Back in 2005 the Internet was buzzing with the news of Edge’s affair with Matt Hardy’s then girlfriend Lita. The pair faced each other At SummerSlam, with Edge winning after the referee chose to end the match and declare Edge the winner because Hardy could not continue. On the August 29 episode of Raw, Edge and Hardy fought to a new contest in a street fight when Hardy threw both himself and Edge off the stage and into electrical equipment. The following week then general manager Eric Bischoff announced that the rematch would be contested inside a steel cage. At the pay per view Hardy would get the victory after delivering a devastating leg drop to Edge from the top of the cage.
2006 - Edge V John Cena
The main event of the 2006 edition of Unforgiven was a tables, ladders and chairs match between Edge and John Cena for the WWE Championship. Prior to the pay per view, Edge had defeated Cena, at Saturday Night’s Main Event and at SummerSlam.
After unveiling a new version of the title belt, Edge agreed to face Cena in another match, but on his terms. After attacking the challenger on Raw, Edge announced that it would be a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match.
2006 - D-Generation X V Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon and The Big Show
After D-Generation defeated the McMahon’s at Summerslam and then proceeded to vandalise WWE headquarters and Vince’s jet plane and limousine on Raw. The next week after DX had already faced the team of Mr. Kennedy, Finlay and William Regal, The Big Show, along with the McMahon’s would attack the fan favourites Triple H and Shawn Michaels.
The result was a Hell in a Cell match, which DX won, after Triple H struck Vince McMahon with his signature sledgehammer.
2007 - Batista V Rey Mysterio V The Great Khali
After Batista was unable to win the World Heavyweight Championship from Khali at SummerSlam, he participated in a tournament in which he lost to Mysterio, the eventual winner. With Mysterio now the number one contender for the title, he was attacked by Khali. Despite loosing to Rey, Batista helped his friend and a triple threat match was booked. put Mysterio in a Khali Vise Grip. Batista made the save, and as a result, he was made a part of the match, making it a Triple Threat match. Batista won the match and the title after landing a spinebuster on Khali.
