Christian Cage’s contract with TNA is said to be due for renewal, will he put his pen to paper on a new deal? Or will he look to continue his career elsewhere?
Over the years, there have been a number of stars that have made the sensational jump from WWE to TNA, but Christian is the only jump that many have been genuinely excited about. The reason he left the WWE in the first place was because he knew he was just one step away, and the main event always seemed agonisingly close, but would never be realised. But now the same is happening in TNA.
When he arrived in TNA, he did so in a blaze of glory and found himself in the main event, and proved to be a good money maker for the company, until Kurt Angle arrived at the promotion.
Since then he has struggled to re-establish himself as the number one heel, or even at the top of the promotion. Yes, he has appeared on the occasional main event, but without really becoming a credible challenger, or threat to the world champion. This has disappointed many people over the past few months, with Christian enjoying what could be considered to be the best in ring shape he has ever been in. His recent program with AJ Styles has been one of the key segments in an otherwise difficult to watch era of TNA Impact.
So why is Christian seemingly been held back? Perhaps it’s because the creative powers that be at TNA simply don’t know what to do with him. If this is the case, then if Christian decides to stay with TNA (should he offered to) then it is unlikely that things will improve.
On the other hand, he could try to resign with the WWE. He left the promotion has he wasn’t going to be a main event player in the company, but left on superb terms after appearing on a Smackdown taping when he was not contractually obligated to. This could be his last chance of a main event (or as close to as possible) feud with his former tag team partner Edge, which should prove to be a success in both ratings and pay per view revenue.
Some of you may be asking why would the WWE want him back? The simple answer is that too a certain extent that Christian, when used correctly can be a genuine main event player, he has all the skills to do so both in the ring and on the microphone. His stint in TNA has now given him the experience of doing that - something which the WWE were seemingly unwilling to do at the time.
What ever Jay Russo does next will be a major decision in his career, could he stay in TNA with the lighter work load and perhaps develop some of the younger workers for the future, or would the chance of one last run in the most prestigious wrestling company in the world be too much for him?
We would like to see Christian re-sign with the WWE, initially teaming up with Edge to have a short feud with The Hardys (any excuse for some TLC?) before having a main event feud with his tag team partner. Once that program is done and dusted, Christian’s experience could prove to be vital to help develop the influx of graduates from the WWE’s developmental territories in mid card matches.
